What is low carbon ferromanganese?
Low carbon ferromanganese LC Ferro Manganese is a family of ferroalloys with high content of manganese (75-85%) and maximum carbon of 0.3%, which is most used in steel and cast iron casting industries. Low-carbon ferromanganese has a gray appearance with brown streaks and is generally lumped or powdered.
This type of ferromanganese is generally used in parts where the presence of a high percentage of carbon causes a change in the steel structure or cast parts. Ferromanganese is used in molten steel to remove sulfur and improve the properties of the steel. which absorbs sulfur and disturbing elements such as nitrogen and brings them into the slag. Ferromanganese also increases the strength and forming and welding properties of alloy steel and improves wear resistance, but it has little effect on elasticity. By adding three percent of manganese, the tensile strength of steel increases by 10 kg/mm. The yield stress changes are also similar to the tensile strength and increasing the manganese in all steel alloys increases the depth of hardness in work hardening.
In some special steels, the presence of carbon is harmful. In these cases, low-carbon ferromanganese is used. The maximum amount of carbon is 0.3% and the amount of manganese varies between 75 and 88%.
Applications of low carbon ferromanganese
Manganese as an alloying agent increases key mechanical properties such as hardness, strength, wear resistance and hardening. Ferromanganese is generally used in the welding industry.
In the production of steel and iron as an oxygen-reducing and sulfur-forming agent
Ferromanganese alloys used in steelmaking and foundry activities
Combining manganese with sulfur to prevent the formation of iron sulfides
Replacement of manganese instead of expensive nickel in some 200 series austenitic grades
Affecting the hardenability of steel
Improving tensile strength, workability, toughness, hardness and wear resistance
Appearance and properties of ferromanganese
In order to recognize a good and high-quality ferromanganese, one must be familiar with the structural and appearance characteristics of this material. The owners of the industries in which this material is used have a detailed understanding of the features of this product:
The appearance of ferromanganese is very similar to lump.
This product is free of non-metallic inclusions and external pollution.
The melting point of this product varies from 1050 to 1260 degrees depending on its grade.
It does not have any smell or moisture.
Before oxidation, it has a silver color and a metallic surface, but when exposed to air, it oxidizes and darkens in color.
The volume density of this product is 4 tons per cubic meter.
It does not dissolve in water.
It is non-flammable.
It has very weak reactivity and does not react with other substances.
It is solid and it is available in the market in fine and sieved form.
